Untwist your panties, kids.

At this point, many of you have already seen the “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” poster campaign. Started by Ohio University’s STARS (Students Teaching About Racism in Society), the project was intended to educate people that Halloween should not be an opportunity to wear your prejudice with pride.


Message received. Racism is still prevalent and I understand what they are trying to accomplish. However…

As with many things that hit the internet, the posters have been parodied. Someone with an imagination and sense of humor started a huge wave of internet memes playing off of these Culture/Costume posters. And I love them. They’re silly, fun and hilarious.

We all know what’s coming, don’t we? You know who doesn’t have a sense of humor? That’s right! The OU students behind the STARS project have their politically correct knickers in a twist over these. (There are plenty of conversation threads over at Saucy-Sarah’s Tumblr on this topic.)

Let’s make this perfectly clear: “meme-ification” does not detract from the original campaign.

Weird Al’s parodies of popular songs do not detract from or change the quality of the originals. Porn spoofs of blockbuster movies do not change the intent of the original films simply by existing. These memes are bringing more attention to your campaign than the campaign itself ever could have hoped to receive. Be grateful, not angry. What good does it do to constantly get offended? Relax. Laugh. Smile.
